Young Rob Johnson just wants to farm his family's land in Morgan County, Virginia, and court pretty Fannie Swann, but the outbreak of war between the North and the South plunges him into a world of treachery and violence. Threatened by Rebel conscription gangs and Yankee foragers, Rob finally joins the 48th Virginia Infantry and experiences the horrors of war.
Rob still thinks of Fannie, who has been playing a dangerous game for the Southern cause. He's also attracted to brave Laura Meeks, who he saved from a group of renegades. Sick of death and fighting, Rob finds work among Quakers and meets Abigail Treverton - the two are immediately drawn to each other. Treachery follows him, however, and Rob ends up a Yankee prisoner of war. He and his comrades escape, and he returns to find Abigail married. But what of Laura and the child she says is his? Or Fannie, who was his first love?
Rob's troubles do not end with the Confederate surrender, for resentment and bitterness run deep between those who supported the South and those who were on the side of the North. After all he has endured, will Rob be able to keep his family farm and make a home for himself and those he loves?

Sally Brinkmann is one of the best writers at work today and this is an excellent example of the magic she works. The historical detail is meticulous, the prose is smooth and craftsmanlike, the characters are real and believable, people you might well know, but caught up as they are in the horrors of the war between the states. The author keeps you turning the pages, but more importantly, she keeps you caring what happens to the people you get to know in her book. An exemplary bit of historical fiction, by a master of the genre.Product details

Between River and Mountain (Audible Audio Edition) Sally Walker Brinkmann Steve Ember Wildside Press LLC Books Reviews
The Civil War comes down home to Appalachia in this story of loyalty to place and people above causes and creeds. Spare, elegant prose and people we care about kept me turning pages in this story of love and loss between river and mountain.
Between River and Mountain is a "good" read - I enjoyed it. The characters are interesting and well-rounded, and the plot is engaging with surprise turns of events. The history of the Civil War in the Appalachian region has been little explored, and this novel adds to our understanding of events that unfolded there.
A ripping story! No slow down of action. A rich take on culture during the Civil War. You care about these people as real characters, three dimentional. I have read it twice. The protagonist survives an awful situation and becomes a loving character. School kids studying the Civil War should read this and not just learn about the specific battles.
