Rogues in Hell Heroes in Hell eBook Janet Morris Richard Groller

With villains and vagabonds, reprobates and rascals, wannabes and would be heroes galore, Rogues in Hell presents an fascinating and satirical selection of stories that allows you to dip your toes into what condemnation is like for those prepared to take unnecessary risks in life and damn the consequences.
Involving many well-known figures from history along with a badly assortment of dastardly hit men, despicable demons, thieves, cowboys and godly auditors, you’ll find a whole world of dark imagination waiting for you that’s sometimes funny, often poignant and always entertaining.
It’s a pity I can’t expand to tell you more, but read between the lines: Rogues in Hell is an intelligent, sardonic read of what the afterlife might hold for all those who step on the cracks in the pavement thinking there won’t be consequences.
I’m hooked – save me a padded cell in Purgatory.

Rogues in Hell Heroes in Hell eBook Janet Morris Richard Groller Reviews

Rouge In Hell, the title captured my interest. This is the first time I have read anything by Janet Morris and I must say I wasn’t disappointed. She takes you on a fascinating roller coaster in hell where many famous people from times gone by are residing next to a roughly variety of dreadful demons, thieves, and holy beings. It can be emotionally touching, but entertaining. You are given a glimpse of what it would be like for those tempted to take needless chances without thinking of the outcome. An entertaining read.
Copied from .co.uk ...
What to say about this fine collection? Firstly this is the first shared world anthology I have read and at first it did seem a little strange, and you don't get much stranger than hell itself! The stories run seamlessly into one another and range from a damned big game hunter taking on the ultimate prey to a quest to find a certain personal item belonging to...well read it and see. Some are funny, some are sad and some surprising but all are lyrically witty.

The world is extremely well constructed, with each author knowing the locations, minions and denizens and nothing seems out of place. Older mythological personages such as Xenophone, Alexander the Great and Aristotle mingle with the likes of Jack the Ripper, Napoleon and even the Duke of Wellington. As with any anthology there were some stories I enjoyed more than others but as a collection this is first class.
The 14th book in the Heroes in Hell anthology series, edited by Janet and Chris Morris, this volume presents Bangsian tales about thieves and thievery in Hell, set against a backdrop of Erra and his seven deadly Sibitti visiting Heaven’s wrath across Hell. Locations are varied, from New Hell to Brooklyn and beyond. The characters in this volume stand out, and are for the most part engaging. Below I describe the first five of twenty-two stories.

Janet and Chris Morris show that the cruelest torture can come under the guise of kindness and hope in ‘A Babe in Hell’. Morris characterization of Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare feels dead on, and their witty banter is a joy to read.

Multiple points of view are woven together in ‘Which Way I Fly Is Hell’ by Janet Morris The Athenian general Lysicles, damned for leading so many to their deaths; Irkalla, the Mesopotamian goddess of the underworld, also called Ereshkigal;Erra, arbiter from Heaven, here to see to the fair distribution of injustice is done. The carnage is great, and the fortunes terrible. It is a good read; experienced readers will enjoy it more. This story ties with ‘Library Redux’, described below, for being my favorite in the book.

Leeches, Toads, and Napoleon - oh my! ‘Downton Run’, by Nancy Asire, describes the attempt by Napolean Bonaparte, Attila the Hun, and the Duke Wellington to acquire a supposedly secure, if slimy, means of communication. Things go awry, as is par for the course in Hell. Weird, but inventive and definitely worth the read.

‘Madly Meeting Logically’, by Michael Armstrong, is about Hart Crane, one time Brooklyn poet, now Satan’s hit man, and his attempt to make a particularly personal kill for His Satanic Majesty, so that Hart can be reunited with his beloved Emil.

In ‘Library Redux’ by Sarah Hulcy, Satan and his chief librarian rebuild the Hall of Injustice and its law library, only to discover certain very valuable items have disappeared from the rubble and cannot be put back on display…yet. A expert on thieves and thievery, par excellence, is hired to track down the thieves. A good story, and it has the feel of being the start of a series of tales about our newly hired thief-taker. I am partial to a good detective story, so I have to say this one was tied as my favorite.

The other stories also deliver. I would definitely recommend this book.
This book contains a compilation of short stories that follow various people and events in hell. Each one is well written and, very entertaining. I highly recommend this book. Now if only I could find the book Heroes in Hell...
I wish all of this series were on , but who has the time, eh? Very creative minds build good characters and ideas.
It is such a joy to read another, Hell book. I love the way historical icons, and personalities are depicted in a hellish environment.
Once again the writing is superb, as is the imagination and creativity of each individual story.

I am slowly getting through each volume and find that I don't want to tell any reader about the stories or plots. You will just have to find out for yourself. These books are memorable, and I have yet to pick a favourite.
If you want a quality, worthwhile read, pick this book up, and then rush to buy the others in the Hell series
