Secrets come in all sorts and sizes. Sometimes, they are as sweet as an engagement ring in a nervous boy's pocket. Other times ... they threaten to shatter your very self. With those kinds of secrets, it's difficult to judge if keeping it or telling it is more damaging. For years, I believed telling my secret was far more dangerous than anything imaginable. I was wrong. My daddy was one of the finest men Allen County, Tennessee ever produced. His brother, Hollis, was a devil from hell. I could never bring myself to tell Daddy or Mama the truth about what Hollis had done, and I was sure God counted me just as guilty. So I carried it inside and never told another living soul. Except for David Lee. Until that summer Phil's daddy died. Then everything unraveled.

Wow! Just finished a book called Touched, by Paula Wiseman. I'm in awe.If it wasn't an autobiography, it sure sounded like it. This woman "shared" this book like she was sitting with good friends telling the story of her childhood years of molestation by her uncle, and subsequent emotional scars, and healing.
This was in no way a depressing read, nor was it graphic. But you find out little by little what she went through, and how her amazing husband helped with her healing, being her confidant and psychologist.
It is by far one of the most amazing books I've read in years. This is the first book about abuse that finally gives me satisfactory answers, rather than trite, pat responses. Many of the other books I've read come across as if to say, "Well, God is good", or "He was with you when you went through it" is an adequate answer to someone hurting, and trying to figure out where was God when this horrible thing happened, and why didn't He stop it??? These answers only served to frustrate me. I've spent years trying to get answers to why bad things happen to His people, and what about those who never received an answer, and to their death were hurting because God allowed something bad in their lives. If it's to teach us something, why do so many go without learning the lesson, and become bitter toward God.
Here's an few excerpts that floored me... mind you, the narrator is a Christian and her husband is a God-loving Christian psychologist...
"If God is omniscient, and I've been told that He is, then He knew this was going to happen. If God is all-powerful, which we've all been told He is, then He could have stopped it. And if God is all-loving like we're taught to believe, then why didn't He?
The main character's perspective is from one who doubts God's judgment and goodness, and love for her. Powerful!!!
"Donna--"
"No Phil, I'll obey Him because He's God, but I'm not sure I love Him and I'm not about to trust Him"
...or, in her ponderings about her situation...
"Phil said it was based on everything "he" knew and believed. Until I told him what happened all those years ago, "he" believed Hollis [the evil uncle] was just fine. Phil had been completely wrong about Hollis. What if he was wrong about God?"
or...
"I know Phil believed, and he desperately wanted me to believe that it wasn't my fault, that it wasn't my shame. The way God was treating me, I didn't see any other way it could be."
Wow!
I will not give away what happened to her, nor how she was healed, but trust me... This book is so worth the read!

Touched Book One Encounters Series Paula Wiseman 9780997033410 Books Reviews
Paula Wiseman has a true gift with words. Through her books, I have found healing and restoration. This is the first book in her newest series, and it did not disappoint. I read it every chance I got, would've read it without stopping if life would've allowed. The emotions Paula awakened in me through her writing were raw, and the book proved to be very therapeutic. Thanks Paula for allowing God to minister to others through your writing.
'Touched' is an amazing story of a woman overcoming a devastating experience from her childhood and reconciling her experience with a God who is good and who loves her. Paula Wiseman has a way of capturing the inner voice of her characters with humor and devastating honesty. She isn't preachy - rather she portrays the crisis of faith experienced by her main character with compassion. As someone who has walked a similar path, I laughed and cried as I read, but I always felt the authenticity of Donna's story. It rang true to me. I also felt that Phil's voice was realistic, loving and honest, and I was very happy to realize that Phil & Donna are characters I had encountered in the author's Covenant of Trust series (this book stands alone, but CoT is also very good).
So many of us go through life feeling broken by things from our past, and we wonder 'where was God in this'? If you have struggled with that question, I believe you will find words that resonate with your soul in 'Touched'.
Paula Wiseman has the habit of writing books that focus on people's lives - not mystery, murder, robbery, etc. - but lives that people have lived and the “stuff” that people bring with them as they live their lives. She has done a great job of doing that again in “Touched”.
Donna Sue Grant, the first person author, begins by writing "Secrets come in all sorts and sizes. Sometimes, they are as sweet as an engagement ring in a nervous boy’s pocket. Other times ... they threaten to shatter your very self. With those kinds of secrets, it’s difficult to judge if keeping it or telling it is more damaging."
And as Donna Sue Grant hid her secret, she knew it was true. Her secret, like most abuse, was burden that was difficult to let go. “Touched” is the story of how she did that. It is a story than many travel as they move out of abusive relationships, regardless of the abusers relationship to the abused. It is not an easy journey, but one that can lead to wholeness. Paula Wiseman has done a good job of describing the journey of fictionalized character.
<Red Flag>If I were to stop this review at this point, it would be a five star review. But the author has endorsed a glaring error in the course of writing this book. Her husband, a counselor in training, serve as Donna Sue Grant’s primary therapist. If this had been a pastor, he might not know of the ethical issues involved in treating his own family. But Phil was being trained in a state university with an exemplary reputation and was being supervised in his current practice by a licensed therapist. He should have learned, as I and every trained therapist learns, that there are ethical issues surrounding the treatment of members of one’s own family. It is the same ethical issues that require that a doctor relinquish treatment of their family to other physicians - who are able to be professionally objective as they treat patients, or in this case clients. For this reader, this flaw raises large red flags that are not addressed in any way within the confines of the book. </Red Flag>
The story has a lot to teach the lay person about the history and effect of abuse on its victim. We get a picture of the burden it puts on the abused, his or her need to protect themself and their abuser. But it also illustrates the freedom that can come once the abuse is revealed. Justice is not always possible, but as scripture says, “The truth shall set you free.” (John 832). The book also presents a clear picture how faith can influence the lives of individuals and families. The author has not stepped back from addressing how faith will change the lives of those who will listen to God’s voice.
This family has more to teach us - the next book has been written, though not yet published. I will be looking forward to reading it in the near future.
